The team took part in a trial day in Canberra on Saturday, winning one game and drawing the other.
Coach David Anable said he’s been impressed by what he’s seen, but urged any player eligible (and turns 18 after January 1) and who is keen to play to come along to training.
The U18s program has already started to reap success for the Club’s senior sides, with five of last year’s 18s taking the step up to grade rugby this season.
Anable brings a wealth of experience to the coaching set up. His rugby CV includes 25 years involvement with the Goulburn Rugby Club as player and coach, and he’s the current Monaro Rugby representative coach.
“We’ve got the nucleus of a great side here, but we need more players to help us get on the field,” Anable said.
“We had 10 Tablelands players on the paddock on Saturday, and we were lucky enough to get a couple of fill ins from Tuggeranong. But what I saw out there on Saturday was very heartening. “If we can get a full squad of players, I believe we can be very competitive this season.
“It comes down to more young blokes who are willing to make a commitment to training and playing with the side.
“This season, we’ve had 18 different players at training. We know we can get enough to put a team together, but we need guys to start making the commitment now,” Anable said.
“There are pathways for players who want to play at higher levels, with Tablelands Reds players eligible for selection in Brumbies representative sides.
“We will exhaust every avenue to provide those players who have already registered a chance to play this year.”
The Tablelands U18s train at Carr Confoy on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm. For more information, contact coach David Anable on 0418 119 208.
