Who is Goulburn’s most generous sporting body?
With winter coming, the call has been made to help those in need.
Angels for the Forgotten is a charity that is in desperate need of blankets and food items for the region’s less fortunate.
The call has been answered by some big hearted sporting associations. Belinda Tapper of the Workers Bulldogs explains…
“The Bulldog’s ladies day last year had $500 spare and it was more than enough to cover this years event, so we normally find somewhere to donate to,” she explained.
“This year we chose this and it’s worked out well. We had $100 which we bought items with and donated.
“We hoped other sports could match us…
“The Crookwell junior football team have so far matched it with $100 and then the cricket club, and the Goulburn juniors (Stockmen) well they beat us, they raised $250 plus a few haircut vouchers as well.
“I also think the basketball stadium was willing to put a box out the front of the stadium.”
Tim Price, president of the Goulburn Cricket Association personally delivered $100 worth of essential items on behalf of Goulburn cricket, to the shop front on Auburn Street yesterday.
“Belinda’s put the challenge out and now I’m putting the challenge out to other Association’s to match what cricket’s done,” he told the Post.
“With homelessness you don’t think about it until it affects you. If it makes a difference it’s a good thing.”
Angels for the Forgotten founder and president Melinda Skidmore said 179 people are registered with the charity as homeless in the city.
“To be eligible people have to register with us and be assessed of their housing situation. We have 179 we have identified as being homeless and on a daily basis we have homeless coming in, especially lately because it’s been raining, they’re looking for shelter,” Miss Skidmore explained.
“There is no more emergency accommodation in Goulburn. We assist anyone who is vulnerable or needy, in particular the homeless. “We’re very aware that this winter will be the first winter where Goulburn hasn’t had a mens or womens refuge because they were both closed down last year.”
