Ruth Gibson and friend Sue Leahy embarked on a rubbish collecting mission of their own last week from Harrington Lane at Tirrannaville for one kilometre to her gate on Braidwood Rd.
Mrs Gibson and Mrs Leahy agree with fellow Braidwood Rd resident Randolph Griffiths that something needs to be done about the situation by Council.
When the women took their load to the tip on Mrs Gibson’s ute, the weighbridge registered 260kg of garbage.
Mayor Geoff Kettle was interviewed on ABC 666 in Canberra about the issue, to which Mrs Gibson listened.
“I took one exception to something Cr Kettle said in that interview, and that was that he knew of other community groups who look after local roads with 100 km/h speed limits,” Mrs Gibson said.
“I agree we should look after our roads to an extent, however the Braidwood Rd is by far the busiest road leading into Goulburn (apart from the Hume Highway, obviously). It was fine walking along the road, but we had to leave the full bags in sections and then come along in the truck and pick them up - this was not as easy!”
Mrs Gibson said that the rubbish she and Ms Leahy collected was mostly plastic bottles, beer cans, drink cans, milk cartons, takeaway containers and straws.
“One lady pulled up behind us when we were loading the truck and said ‘Thank you...I live near the Police Academy, and I drove past and saw that you were doing this, and when I got home I thought ‘ I’m going to go back and thank them.’ How nice was that?” Mrs Gibson said.
The two ladies are aiming to do another stretch of road from their turnoff to the Tirrannaville Public School in the next month or so..
