The small group of students landed on home soil on April 22, after an 11 day trip to Louisville, Kentucky for the event.
The team, comprised of Year 12 students Mitchell Webster, Ashley Hind, Will Hargan, Joe Muscarella and Emmot Falconer; were the first to represent Australia at the World Championships.
They left their mark in their first year, finishing 46th out of 450 experienced competing teams.
More than 15,000 students from across 27 countries participated in last month’s event. But, it was the humble group from Goulburn who walked away with the Vex Community Award.
The students wished to extend a huge thankyou to the Goulburn community for supporting them.
“We have to say a big thanks to Mrs Hyland and the community for supporting us to get to the USA,” Mr Hargan said.
Mr Hargan said while the current Robotics team will finish school this year, a few junior students had submitted interest in continuing to represent Goulburn High School.
The Vex Robotics competition was designed to inspire students to pursue an education in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). In the competition, teams are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams from around the world in a game-based engineering challenge.
Goulburn High School’s robot ‘Frisky’ wowed judges throughout all levels of the competition, from the Oceanic Championships in April last year to the National Robotic Championships in December, and the World stage.
To get there, the students worked hard to fundraise, with more than $23,000 collected from community clubs, businesses and personal donations.
