Amazingly, Goulburn, who have scored the most goals in the competition, were kept scoreless by the Checks, who worked hard for each other in defence and kept to their game plan.
The first 20 minutes was scrappy, with both teams guilty of turning the ball over in attack.
At 22 minutes, OCHC worked the ball into Goulburn’s circle and were awarded a penalty corner, but goalkeeper, Lennon Harley, made a fine save.
Goulburn kept the pressure on but Checks defence held tight and went to the break, leading one goal to nil.
During the second half, Goulburn kept pressing forward, but were unable to get a shot at goal because of Checks tight marking.
Between 40 and 50 minutes, Goulburn received four penalty corners but failed to convert because of great goalkeeping by Lennon Harley and superb first running by Tristen Kearns.
At 55 minutes, OCHC, after receiving a lot of attack from Goulburn, went on the counterattack and received a penalty corner and another great flick from James Day found the net, extending the OCHC lead to two goals to nil.
At 60 minutes, OCHC scored through man-of-the-match, Isaac Russell, with a fine backhand shot after a quick team passing move.
Goulburn went on an all-out attack in the closing minutes but were unable to break OCHC’s strong defence which worked hard all game. Great win to OCHC and thoroughly deserved.
Best for Checks, Isaac Russell who worked hard all game, Tristen Kearns with superb penalty corner running, Seyi Onitiri for keeping his defence in line.
Best for Geckos, Dean Robertson, Kurt Devlin and Aaron Kershaw for trying hard to get Goulburn moving forward.
The Goulburn Women scored with seconds to go to snatch a 2-1 win over UCHC in Canberra.
No games in men’s competition next weekend, the women play at home next Saturday against Albury at 3.30pm.
Special thanks to the ball boys who did a great job.
