NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione joined Deputy Premier and Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant for a visit in Goulburn last week as part of a whirlwind regional tour.
“It was a chance to catch up and say thank you to the troops, to encourage them and let them know their work is valued,” Comm. Scipione said of their Tuesday night stopover.
“It’s also a way to get back in touch with reality.
“These Police out there on the streets, they are the real heroes who keep us safe.”
He told the Post the future was bright for policing in Goulburn - with ongoing minor upgrades to the Academy and a strong, experienced team at the Station.
“We’ve got some work going on down there (at the Academy) particularly around some of the scenario villages,” he said.
“What we are proposing to do, and what is just about to happen is that the very first helicopter that NSW Police purchased Pol Air 1... we still own that helicopter and we are about to place it down at the academy.
“It will become a very important feature down there and is a piece of history that is very important to us.”
Former police inspector Mr Grant, a frequent visitor and even resident of Goulburn during his training at the Academy, said the stopover was an opportunity to hear first hand from local police about their “frontline challenges”.
“It was a very positive experience,” he said of his discussions with Goulburn officers.
“It was a massive turnout in Goulburn and we were very appreciative of their feedback.”
Mr Grant, MP for Dubbo, hinted at another visit in Goulburn next month in his capacity as Police Minister - as well as Arts Minister.
He will attend the August Police Academy attestation parade and might also see a Lieder Theatre production.
He revealed he had been in discussions with Goulburn Mulwaree Council general manager Warwick Bennett about possible funding for a new performing arts centre.
While in town last week, Comm. Scipione awarded Goulburn General Administrative Support Officer (GASO) Rebecca Doughty with a special award for scoring 100 per cent in a customer service survey.
