As part of the proceedings, a Valour Award was presented to Senior Constable Michael Bobako.
In November 2010, Snr Cst Bobako and other officers responded to a call about a man threatening friends with a knife. Police were later involved in a pursuit with the man, during which the offender rammed the police vehicle before escaping on foot.
Snr Cst Bobako and other officers later attended the man’s house, where the offender confronted them armed with a tyre iron. Snr Cst Bobako was subsequently struck with the tyre iron and suffered significant injuries.
Despite these injuries and being unable to move his injured arm, Snr Cst Bobako, fearing for his safety and that of his colleagues, was forced to shoot the man.
NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione awarded Snr Cst Bobako with a Valour Award for conspicuous merit and exceptional bravery in the line of duty.
As the presentation began, dozens of ranked officers lined the parade ground, a mark of respect for their colleague.
“Today’s Valour Award recognises the incredible courage and selflessness displayed by Snr Cst Bobako under extraordinary circumstances,” Comm. Scipione said.
“Snr Cst Bobako risked his personal safety to ensure the safety of his fellow officers and the wider community.
“His actions represent the highest standard of the NSW Police Force and it’s an honour to acknowledge him here today.”
Also present at the ceremony was Governor of NSW, Hon. David Hurley, who led the inspection of the Force’s latest recruits on the parade ground.
The students of Association Degree in Policing Practice Class 325 will report to their new stations for work today.
“From today onward, they’ll be tasked with the safety and security of the people of NSW and I’m confident that they will uphold the Force’s statement of values in performing those duties,” Comm. Scipione said.
