He won the title fight in Brisbane a fortnight ago fighting above his age and weight.
Now calling Goulburn home, Vaughan 16 and his family moved here from the Highlands about three weeks ago for a change of lifestyle.
Vaughan is keen to continue his boxing, which he took up three years ago, aged 13 to help with his fitness for rugby, but he found quickly that he actually enjoyed boxing more than rugby.
He was 14 when he had his first fight Vaughan had just turned 15 when he placed second in the Golden Gloves Tournament last year which was only his fifth fight.
Just a fortnight ago he won the Australian Youth (17-18 years) 91kg plus title weighing in at 88kg.
“I had to fight above my age and weight division to get a fight in the Golden Gloves tournament in Brisbane,” he said.
“I have a pretty powerful punch and good reach, I am six foot one and a half inches tall and have long arms too.
“I have won a NSW Championship title three times now. and am looking forward to continuing with my boxing.”
Vaughan said the thing he liked most about the sport was the adrenalin rush and then the sportsmanship after the bouts.
When he first started his dad Steven Vaughan trained him and then he started training with Grange Old School Boxing Gym Narellan.
“Dad is a licensed boxing trainer and my grandfather was also a boxer,” he said.
This weekend he is hoping to fight in the youth division of a tournament arrange in Camden which will include the Elite Division NSW Title fights the tournament will take place over three days from Friday to Sunday at the AH&I Hall in Argyle St Camden.
Damien said he is not at school at present because of the moving around but hopes to continue with his year 11 studies at one of goulburn’s high schools next year.
“I am looking at a possible career in personal training or something like that,” he said.
“In the mean time I am concentrating on my training with dad coaching me, I am also looking for suitable training facilities here and have yet to get down to the PCYC and seriously check out their facilities.
“We are a very close family and everyone, mum, dad, my younger brother and two sisters all support and encourage me with my boxing.“
