That’s why it’s one thing to be warned against drug use from police, health professionals, politicians and the media; yet another thing entirely to hear about Ice from someone who was once addicted. That’s the aim of next Thursday’s second community Ice Forum in Goulburn.
Narcotics Anonymous, Springfield House and WHOS (We Help Ourselves) will play a major role in the night, featuring first hand talks from members of the community who have taken drugs, taken the first few steps to support and overcame their addiction.
Drug users are invited to attend, at no risk to them.
Hume Local Area Commander Zoran Dzevlan says the forum will not be attended by uniformed police, in a bid to encourage those who want to know more about available support to feel comfortable in doing so.
It’s a new angle and one we think will pay off.
While many people are likely to rebel against warnings, it’s important they know that if they do, the community is here for them.
Superintendent Zoran Dzevlan acknowledges in his column today (page 17) that it takes courage “to stand up and do what is best for your friends and family”. But the support is out there.
Not just for users, but for family and friends.
“Obtain the information you need and seek the assistance you require, whether it be from the Police, Health or other supporting agencies,” Supt Dzevlan says.
The forum will start at 6.30pm at St Saviour’s Hall.
