It is clear that Warwick Bennett intends to subject ratepayers to a lot of money to try and prove a point.
I tend to think most councillors will be smart enough to ask for much more background detail, as well as true costs.
A council newspaper (sorry, brochure) coming out once every fortnight will be stale before it is written, let alone printed.
Who will the 'journalist' be and will they be a member of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (Australian Journalists’ Association) and abide by its code of conduct – ie: news balance without favour? Will the 'paper' be insured against libel or will the news be so soft and one sided that legalities will not be an issue?
Wasting ratepayers money like this leaves Mr Bennett open to ridicule and some might suggest, an eventual visit to the Local Government Minister's office for a please explain.
Furthermore, if the Goulburn Post is as biased as seemingly alleged, there is the Press Council to bring such issues up. And then there is Media Watch!
I say, be very careful guys and stick to core business.
Leon Oberg, Goulburn
