Then he and his family took a road trip to Victoria on September 20, which resulted in a Victorian title win and a separate trophy for boxer of the tournament.
The fight program was at the Reggio Calabria Club and it was the HK Clothing Victorian Novice and Intermediate Championships.
“I wasn’t really feeling well when I stepped into the ring at the club but the place was packed and besides my family who also travelled down from NSW to watch me there were aunts, uncles and cousins from the Victorian branch of my family cheering me on, “ Vaughan said.
“Ït was a really good venue and I had not realised before I arrived that it was such a major event.
“There were about thirty fights on the program over three days.
“The fellow I was to fight, Isaac Toupou was the Victorian Heavyweight Junior Champion.”
Vaughan said that this was one of the hardest fights he has fought. Toupou was a very hard hitter and quite quick too. Toupou and Vaughan are the same age and have similar goals in rising to the top of their chosen sport.
“I really had to work hard and I don’t think it was one of my better fights,” Vaughan said.
“They were the longest three two minute rounds I can remember or that is what it seemed. “The judges gave me the win on points.”
It was not just the championship trophy that Damien Vaughan won but he was also presented with a trophy for Boxing Victoria’s HK Clothing Best Boxer of the 2015 Novice and Intermediate Championships.
To compete in boxing tournaments, there is a lot of travel involved often interstate.
So far this year Vaughan has competed in three states and the Australian titles in November which he has qualified for are in Western Australia where he expects to be contesting the Junior Super Heavyweight Championship.
Vaughan said that he was hoping to find some sponsorship to help with the travelling expenses involved in his sporting competition.
