This year is the second year the run has been held in memory of Peter Oberg, who was a passionate athlete and member of the Goulburn Runners and Walkers Club along with his brother Andrew.
The run is one of nine Greater Union Fun Runs held across the state, with events including a 10km run from Carr Confoy Park and up the steps to Rocky Hill and back down again to Carr Confoy Park, as well as a 5km run and a 2km run.
The Peter Oberg Memorial Trophy went to local runner Jonathan Moore, who came fourth in the 10km run with a time of 37:46.
Moore told the Post he was happy with his run and was honoured to receive the trophy.
“I felt great and feel as though I pushed myself to my best,” he said.
“That hill was a big challenge but I feel that I definitely took it home strong.”
Moore hopes to participate in another 10km run in the series in the near future.
Peter Oberg’s brother Andrew told the Post that the run was a fitting tribute to his brother who unfortunately passed away in 2014 after a tragic fishing accident at Sugarloaf Point near Seal Rocks on the NSW North Coast, which was a very emotional time for the Oberg family.
“This is actually the third year since the reintroduction of the Goulburn Fun Run, but the second year that we have had the Peter Oberg Memorial Trophy,” he said.
“It is indeed a very fitting tribute to Pete.
Running was something that was very close to his heart and is to mine also.
It’s certainly an honour for the recipient of this award and I would have loved to have got my hands on it, but I’m glad it’s gone to a really good home this year.
Jonathan is a rising star, so it’s fantastic for him to receive this trophy.”
In the 10km run, former Olympian Martin Dent got across the line first for the second year in a row with a time of 32 mins 31 sec.
“It was a good run… it’s pretty hard going at this rate as you’ve got to run hard up that hill and hard down it,” Dent said.
“I was sort of hurting a bit in the last few kilometres, but I’m pleased to get a win again and its great coming up to Goulburn every year to do the fun run here.”
Dent said he has a few ‘lower key’ activities coming up in the near future.
“I’m due to compete in an ultra marathon of 60km in December in New Zealand so I’ll have to start doing some longer training runs for that and be ready to run well there.”
In second place was Joshua Torley from Canberra with a time of 34:01, and in third place was Paralympian T46 runner Michael Roeger with a time of 34:56.
In the women’s 10km event, 10 year old Stephanie Torley from Canberra came first with a time of 43:07, followed in second place by local cyclist and athlete Michelle Crawford with time of 43:47, and in third place Kylie Worboys with a time of 50:18.
