Dean of St Saviour’s the Very Reverend Phillip Saunders said the service would remember those killed in recent terrorist atrocities in Paris, Baghdad and Beirut, and other less reported places.
“Talking to people in the community and just within the church community, many people have close associations with Paris or are there at the moment,” he said.
“It has affected our community in such a way, we thought it would be good to express our grief for people killed and our grief over ongoing terrorist attacks.”
Dean Saunders said the events had made people more fearful and anxious.
Even if people didn’t have relatives in Paris, the community generally viewed the city as a beautiful place, reflecting the best of western society. In this respect, the terrorist attacks were shocking for many.
Clergy from other local churches will concelebrate what is billed as a “simple, reflective service”.
The Anglican Bishop of Canberra/Goulburn Stuart Robinson will deliver a homily. Bishop Robinson has also invited local MPs, but Goulburn MP Pru Goward has tendered her apology due to parliamentary commitments. Goulburn Mulwaree Mayor Geoff Kettle will attend.
“People of good will, any faith or no faith are most welcome to attend,” Dean Saunders said.
