Emergency services were called to the Goulburn Airport after 4pm on Monday following reports that a skydiver had been injured.
The skydiver died at the scene and police are preparing a report for the coroner.
The skydiver, whose name has not been released, was participating in the Skyplay event currently being hosted by Adrenalin Skydiving. Skyplay started on Monday December 28 and is expected to finish on New Year's Eve.
Chief instructor with Adrenalin Skydive, Yaakov Bokay, said the accident was the result of human error and not attributable to equipment failure or wind conditions.
"We take incredible care with safety... all of the skydivers do, obviously," Mr Bokay said.
"It's so important to get it right, that accidents are very, very uncommon. But you can't fully prevent human error."
Mr Bokay said that the skydiver had executed the dive perfectly with the parachute opening successfully at 4,000 ft, but that the accident occurred as a result of attempting a turn too close to landing.
The skydiver landed face down and was bleeding profusely. He was given CPR at the scene until paramedics arrived.
Former soldier Tony Rokov, also aged 44, died in a skydiving accident on November 21. Mr Rokov saved the life of a young first-time skydiver in a heroic final act after a freak wind caused their tandem parachute to drop suddenly.
The injured boy, Elijah Arranz, from Canberra, is recovering from his injuries.
Mr Bokay said the two accidents weren't related in any way.
"They are completely different accidents. Tony Rokov's accident was a result of a freak wind," he said.
A memorial tribute to Tony Rokov had been planned for 1.30pm on Tuesday, and was modified to include a tribute to this skydiver.
