RECENTLY I wrote in a letter to the paper saying that councillor Bob Kirk voted in favour of removing those trees in Bradley St.

This was an error and I apologise for my mistake.
In fact, Cr Kirk is actively for the preservation of trees in Goulburn and committed to planting more trees.
It is some consolation, then, that the vote at the council meeting was, in fact, very close.
Cr Kirk, Cr Rowland, Cr Saville and Cr James voted against cutting down the trees; while Mayor Kettle, Cr Banfield, Cr O'Neill, Cr Sturgiss and Cr Walker voted for cutting down the Bradley St trees.
According to the minutes of the council meeting December 15, 2015:
Cr Kirk: "The cost of removing the plane trees - estimated at $15,000 be funded by Council and the remaining works to be funded by Goulburn Mazda."
Presumably this means that Goulburn Mazda will be funding the cost of replacing the old broken storm water pipes that were the original cause of the problem.
David 'Mac' Ramsay, Goulburn.
Editor's note: As reported in the Post of December 18, the eight Bradley St plane trees, each about 30m high (and now felled), will be replaced with chanticleer pears. The plane trees' "aggressive root system" had long caused issues for local businesses through significant damage to road, footpath and stormwater infrastructure, including flooding in 2010. Goulburn Mazda principal Kieran Davies will plant the pears at his own cost. The council paid $15,000 to removes the plane trees. Councillors voted six to three in favour of this decision.
