The march was led by the Goulburn Soldiers Pipes and Drums Band; then followed veterans and their descendants, cadets from Trinity College, the public school students and the Pony Club. Wreathes (28) were laid at the Cenotaph by local organisations and individuals. The march then proceeded to the War Memorial Hall for the Commemoration Service.

Mr Beasley acted as master of ceremonies and invited vice president Richard Davison to open proceedings with the Prologue. School captain Jessica Sharman offered the prayer of thanksgiving while the other vice president, Neill Croker, read the prayer for the Queen. Secretary Julie Alders then offered the prayer for the nation. The school children sang 'Lest We Forget': it was outstanding.

Guest speaker Dr Kerry Neale gave an interesting and informative commemoration address. Dr Neale has a Doctorate on Military History and works at the Canberra War Memorial. Danny Cummins then presented the Greg Cummins Memorial Award for the Best Turned-Out Horse and Rider to Chloe Neale. Courtesy of the Cole Bradbury Memorial Presentation, Mikayla Barber accepted a book for the school library from Mr Beasley. Goulburn MP Pru Goward then read out the commemoration of the fallen before Sister Bernadette Mary led the assembly in the Lord's Prayer.

Mr Beasley thanked the various organisations for their assistance in making Anzac Day a memorable event. A big thank you and presentation was made to Glenys Dymock for coming from Boorowa to play the organ.

A correction

DUE to a clerical error, a mistake was made in the birth date of Harry McIntosh. The paragraph should have read: A BABY BOY - Heather and Colin McIntosh welcomed their first son on April 15. Harry James Keith weighed 9 and a half pounds (4.3kg) at 54cm. Harry is a brother for Ruby and Layla and the grandson of Bill and Di Stoll and Margaret McIntosh.

Road maintenance

UPPER Lachlan Shire's manager of works Garry Anable says that maintenance grading in particular is a challenge because of prevailing dry conditions across the Shire. "The road grading process consumes a considerable amount of water and there simply isn't enough water available for council to sufficiently undertake grading works in some parts of the Shire," Mr Anable said. "Currently, council is grading roads where we have water readily available. While we understand that residents may have concerns about some roads in the Shire, we need to ensure that these roads are graded correctly the first time, and that requires a significant amount of water. Due to the dry conditions, council is unable to withdraw large amounts of water from local watercourses that are normally running (but are almost dry at present). Farmers are understandably reluctant to allow council to have access to farm dams for road works at present, due to their own reliance on them for stock and domestic water. Residents can be assured that roads identified and on council's maintenance schedule will be graded as soon as practical."

Show Dinner

CRAIG Croker, AP&H president, welcomed guests to the annual Show Dinner. This community event, Craig said, was an important part of the district's social life and he welcomed the Show patrons and Upper Lachlan Shire Council mayor John Shaw. An excellent meal was presented by Lisa Francis and her assistants. The caterers were sincerely thanked by the guests. Guest speaker Rob Batty, a mechanical engineer, spoke on his work in the fourth-largest bakery in the world and astounded listeners with the huge amounts of wheat and flour used: 27,000 tonne of flour per year was one quotation. Mr Batty said that it was important that suppliers were treated with trust, respect and honesty. This adds value to the supply chain and is an important part of customer relations. Mr Croker thanked Mr Batty for a most interesting speech. He then gave special thanks to Don and Kerry Taylor and Sandra Keith for their hard work, which contributed much to the success of the Show. Craig also spoke on the Rodeo Committee ploughing and sowing the arena following the Rodeo and gave a special tribute to John Corby for attending to the watering of the ground, which assured the green arena at Show time. In closing, Craig thanked everyone for their presence and reminded guests that the AGM would be held late in July.

OLDER residents remember when Venn was a well-known name in the district. Archives of the Historical Society show that James Venn (1812-1991) married Mary Byrnes. Their children were: Margaret (1844-1885); John (1846-1937) married Rhodina Murdock; Mary Jane (1849-1919) married Edward Chalker; George (1832); James (1853-1942) married Cecilia Cosgrove; Elizabeth (1857) married John Plummer; Eileen (1859); Clementine (1860) married John Murphy; Francis (1861-1916) married Margaret Beavers. The family of James and Cecilia were: Mary Ellen (1883-1962) married Albert Roberts; Margaret (1885-1977) married Christopher Johnson; Agnes (1887-1978) married Edwin Ingall; Elizabeth (1889-1976) married William Miller; Ciscelia (1892-1976) married John Francis Gleeson; John Francis (1894-1977) married Valencia Montgomery; Florence (1898-1898); Madeline (1900-1991) married William Brownlow; Kathleen Winifred (1902-1991) married David Coventey.

Onward and upward

ANNIE Cummins recently graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Oral Health. Annie has relocated to Griffith to pursue her career as an oral health therapist providing clinical and promotional dental services. 

Engagement

DAN and Trish Cummins are thrilled to announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Sophie, to Brad Brown. Brad, the son of Russell Brown and Leanne Coleman of Queanbeyan, popped the question early last month while the couple was taking a break in Mollymook. Sophie is a primary teacher at St Thomas More School, Canberra, while Brad teaches at St Gregory’s Primary School, Queanbeyan. They intend to marry next year.
