WITH winter coming up, I think it is time I reminded road users that Goulburn roads are very porous and prone to black ice.

This problem arises because water simply stays on the road surface and freezes overnight.
The way to stop this is by our beloved council to resurface all roads with hot mix rather than tar and stone.
Hot mix has a lot of positives in its favour. It has been proven to not only have less black ice, but it is kinder to car tyres, car braking, and it lasts longer, to name a few.
Tar and gravel have a few negatives. I wonder if the council ever takes into account the fact they have to send a sweeper many times after the tar and gravel is set to clean the loose gravel. You also have the possibility of windscreen damage. Tyre wear is increased and, if a child or adult fell over, they lose a lot of skin. I can go on about this, but will stop there.
So why is the council not using hot mix? Well, I will leave that question to be answered by the council
Paul Agius, Goulburn.
