The Fizzy Reds games start at 5.30pm and finish at 6.10pm for under 6 to under 8s both boys and girls, and the under 10s to under 12s start at 6.15pm and finish at 7pm so it is not a late night even for those teams who travel.
“The youngsters involved are the future of the senior rugby union competition,” organiser Matt Klem said.
“The games are designed to teach the youngsters the basic skills of the game with more skills introduced as the players get older.
“The emphasis is also on having fun so the kids want to come back each week and beyond that next season too.
“This season, teams will be coming from Braidwood, Crookwell and Goulburn to the central venue of Carr Confoy, where the games are played under lights.
“Other youngsters also travel in from neighbouring areas like Taralga and Bungonia to play, learn and have fun.
“This tradition of Friday night junior rugby started back in about 1997. The idea being that it did not clash with other sports and brought the families together for a fun evening that was not too late for the little ones.”
Klem said that the youngsters participate in training on Thursday evenings, again, at Carr Confoy Park from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
The idea of holding training on Thursdays means that the youngsters can put into practice what they learn in a game the next evening.
Some of the teenage members of the rugby clubs also get involved as game officials and assist by passing on their skills and knowledge of the game to the youngsters.
Any parents with children who would like to learn to play rugby union can either contact Matt Klem on 0402 060 342 or turn up to Carr Confoy on Thursday or Friday and make contact with one of the officials. Fees for the season are $40 for under 8s, and $80 for under 10s and under 12s.
The under 6s are free. For their fees the youngsters get shorts, socks and a training shirt.
