It is not something that one immediately associates the city with, but it should be something that is loudly promoted about Goulburn as a place to live.
"Come and live in Goulburn - the greenest city in the country." Think we are dreaming? Well, read these facts.
We have the largest Tesla electric car charging facility in the country; the city is located close to seven massive operating wind farms; and we may soon have the country's first community-owned solar farm within the city limits.
According to people like Peter Fraser, a spokesperson from The Goulburn Group and Community Energy for Goulburn (CE4G), the city is definitely punching above its weight when it comes to renewable energy. We are even likely to beat Canberra to hosting the first community-owned solar farm in the country.
Due to the amazing and famous wind resource here - and the city's close proximity to no less than seven operating wind farms (within 100km) - Goulburn is also very likely to be actually mostly powered by renewable electricity, because all of this power just gets fed into the grid at the closest point. Think about that!
It has been a 'quiet revolution' and a few factors may have led to this over the past decade.
The construction of the wind farms nearby was the catalyst. These wind farms are now producing an amazing amount of electricity. A quick calculation from online published figures estimates they can generate a total of 542MW of power at maximum capacity.
The establishment of the Veolia Environmental Services Woodlawn Bioreactor has been another great renewable project for the district. This project recycles Sydney's waste to create methane gas to power generators, which in turn power an export-quality fish-farm. There is also a large wind farm on site.
What is really driving this city in this quiet revolution, though, is a bunch of committed individuals who make up The Goulburn Group and CE4G.
One must also give the council credit, too, for facilitating and assisting these groups, establishing the Tesla charging stations and assisting with the annual Sustainability Festival held in the city.
A a new community-owned solar farm right in our city might be about to change the perception of Goulburn and make it known for more than just its jail and Big Merino.
