At the current time, the value of iron ore and other mineral assets is waning. The coal industry is in structural decline. This portends the truth that we must eventually confront: that the non-renewable nature of these products will ultimately result in their depletion.
Australia is ideally placed to perform a shift into technology and innovation. Our proximity to the resources in Asia makes this an ideal location for international co-operation, and our world-class tertiary education system attracts students and teachers alike from abroad.
The imminent deterioration of the mining industry necessitates a major shift in our national commercial attitude, and the onus is on the youth to enact a transition into sustainable areas for the future.
To this effect, Goulburn High School enthusiastically enables computer-related courses throughout student's careers. The recently introduced Software Design and Development subject (for years 11and 12) is the most advanced computer course currently offered by GHS.
SDD students have the opportunity to develop practical programming skills in a range of languages, including HTML, Python and Java, as well as attend excursions to observe programmers in the workplace at Google and Adobe. This course promotes computer literacy and provides a basis for skills in areas such as source-code/ website development and computer ethics.
Now is the time to foster the competencies which will equip our youth to best take advantage of the opportunities which will present themselves in the future.
