As their models and by instruction we help them overcome their wayward tendencies. We opt for the moral muscles of character, hence for good manners and self-restraint.
Our moral values are under attack by by government programs serving only to weaken them further: eg. a Safe Schools Coalition, which negates self-restraint in favour of confused feelings.
Far better to curb tendencies to mockery, sarcasm, cheating, lying, self-abuse of drugs or reproductive organs. Self-restraint depends on religion, respect, reason and responsibility, which in turn make teaching reading, 'riting and 'rithmatic easier.
