Instead of initially admonishing her, John Holland group and Transport NSW should have been thanking Kerry Hawkins.
She has created a little oasis on a long disused piece of railway land on the Taralga Rd. Over 30 years she has poured her heart and soul into this little patch. It’s a delight for travelling motorists to see.
Ms Hawkins removed car parts and loads of rubbish simply because she was sick of looking at them and it made her own place look unsightly.
The railway, with their never ending restructures, certainly wasn’t doing the job.
We’re glad that Transport NSW has seen some sense, following the Post’s questions on Friday.
The ever pervasive OH&S concerns can surely be balanced with Ms Hawkins’ pure desire to beautify the area.
It comes down to civic pride, and she has it in spades. It’s a pet subject of Deputy Mayor Bob Kirk, who initiated a group to tidy up the West Goulburn Bushland Reserve.
It’s about not littering your city and finding ways to improve your area. It’s about not dumping mattresses because it’s the easy option, and much more.
On Highland Way near Tallong and Middle Arm Rd, residents are often spotted picking up rubbish that others have thoughtlessly left.
So good on them and the likes of Kerry Hawkins. We wish there were more like them.
If only the boffins in bureaucracy land took the same tack, we’d be much better off.
ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES
COUNCIL has taken a prudent approach to its effluent irrigation farm at North Goulburn.
Yes, the process has been a little convoluted but taking a deep breath (no pun intended) on the farm’s sale or lease has proven correct.
Rather than selling off the soon to be surplus property following expressions of interest last year, it commissioned a wider report.
Now councillors are apprised of all the options. Agriculture, eco-tourism and even a solar farm are all possibilities.
The latter is perhaps the most exciting of all. On this, Mayor Geoff Kettle has not ruled out a partnership with Community Energy for Goulburn, which has proposed a solar farm off Sydney Rd.
