The Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn the Right Reverend Stuart Robinson opened Parliament on August 30.
The opening of the 45th Session of Parliament included an Ecumenical Service at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, in Forrest, Canberra.
The Right Reverend Stuart Robinson opened Parliament in front of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten and most of the ambassadors in Canberra
But it was all in a day’s work for the busy Bishop and he encouraged them all to be good.
“I encouraged the pollies to lead a life that is pleasing to God,” Bishop Robinson said.
On the day, he read from 2016 Jeremiah 18:1-10; Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18; and Matthew 5:1-12.
He said Jesus’ words in Matthew 5 were a fine starting point for the day.
“Now, this august gathering comprises busy people with responsibilities beyond our ken, I should think. Thank you for your willingness to serve and to lead. Your task is onerous, generally thankless, and oftentimes personally depleting. Right?”
Bishop Robinson is the first Bishop to live in Goulburn in over 60 years, since moving here in 2013. His choice is fitting, given the establishment of the diocese here over 150 years ago.
