Last Wednesday the tables that had served the club well for about 15 years were removed from the clubhouse and replaced with new international standard tables similar to those used in the Olympics and Paralympics.
John Lees, who organised the purchase of the new tables, said that Table Tennis NSW had bought 30 of these tables and they would be used for the Australian Veterans tournament, which he and Michael Turner would be competing in, October 14-21.
“The Lions Club of Goulburn City has provided us with funding for one of the tables and we have purchased the rest,” Mr Lees said. “They retail for around $1500 each, though we did get a better deal than that.
“The tables came complete with new nets and posts and we were able to get a trade-in on our old tables, too.
“With the publicity the club has been receiving, it has had about a 25 per cent increase in membership; mostly younger players who are keen to learn.”
The club's competition-standard playing facilities have enabled it to host its first major event, the Public Service and Insurance Table Tennis Tournament, over October 23-27.
