Members of the Goulburn Community Garden know this as well as the pleasure and health benefits that derive from growing their own organic produce.
This Saturday, October 1 the Goulburn Community Garden will be holding an open day for people to come down and check it out.
The garden is situated in raised garden beds on two old tennis courts behind the Uniting Church in Goldsmith St and will be open from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
Members of this group have been very active in tending to these garden beds, which are now producing abundant fruit and vegetables.
The garden is a tranquil and creative place, right to be in the centre of the city. The garden members have not only learned some great gardening tips and skills, but have also developed into a warm social group that is always keen for more members.
Member Ray Shiel said as well as individual beds for members to grow their own vegetables, there was a permaculture garden containing all sorts of edible plants and fruit trees as well as a worm farm and large composting bins. There was also a grassy area to socialise.
“There will be various plants on the day for sale including some varieties of heritage tomatoes,” Mr Shiel said.
