How much money donated to research actually made it to scientists researching cures? In FY 2015/16, Cancer Council NSW raised $81.1 million, allocated to research, program delivery, advocacy, prevention, information and support services, said spokeswoman Kelly Dinnerville. Almost $14.9m of this was exclusively invested in research, she said.
Is working at the Cancer Council just a job? “Everyone’s life has been touched by cancer,” Kelly said of the work that lets her “help others”.
Why do people donate to charity? Most people want to donate to “do something to make a difference,” she said.
When donations are tax-deductible, do people only donate to get their tax back? Even though it is tax-deductible, people are still giving, which is making a difference, she said.
What research and programs do Cancer Council NSW support? Money raised at Goulburn Relay for Life would be spent in the Goulburn community helping provide support services and information for families who have been touched by cancer, Kelly said. The money raised would help subsidise accommodation for families who need to stay near major hospitals in Sydney.
So I could see the money Trinity Catholic College is raising through our ‘Relay for Life’ team would have a direct and immediate effect on our community.
I am still a little bit cynical about the way some charities operate more like businesses with marketing and sales people.
However, I can see that the money we raise does have an immediate and local impact.
It does make a big difference to families and people whose lives have been affected by cancer.
