For the first time, a collection of over 130 sumptuous treasures from the Palace of Versailles is coming to Australia exclusively to the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in Canberra.
The works on exhibition contrasts small personal items with grand palatial artworks and will include paintings, tapestries, furniture, monumental statues and other objects from the Palace of Versailles.
The exhibition focus is on a period central to French history, bringing life to the reign of three kings – Louis XIV to Louise XVI.
From the iconic gardens to rich paintings, from sumptuous rooms to the golden details, a spokesperson from the NGA said this exhibition will be a wonderful cultural experience to behold this summer.
The NGA is presenting information sessions on the exhibition across part of the Southern Tablelands Arts region in November. These sessions last about an hour and are provided buy a Public Education Officer from the NGA.
Executive Director at Southern Tablelands Arts Susan Conroy said commented it was that building on the success of last year’s NGA Tom roadshow for the Tom Roberts exhibition.
“The information sessions are a fantastic opportunity for the communities in our region to get insights about the artists who created the works on display and the life and times of the Versailles Court,’ Ms Conroy said.
She said STARTS had worked with various councils across the region to develop a roadshow itinerary for the 2016 Versailles: Treasures from the Palace road show to visit Bowral, Braidwood, Goulburn, Taralga and Yass.
“We are lucky that most of us live within one to three hours of wonderful national cultural institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia and that the summer holiday period is a great time to make a day visit to Canberra and visit this exhibition,” Ms Conroy said.
A free information session will be presented at Workspace 2580 (in the new Community Hub at 56 Clinton Street) on Thursday 10 November, from 1 to 3 pm.
