This is the third year of sponsorship by the Goulburn Workers Club and their loyalty has been clearly acknowledged by local participants during recent months.
Last year’s cup winner Let It Develop ran a track record to take the 2015 event and has drawn the same box again this year.
Trained by Anthony Azzopardi last year, My Boy Rylan is now back with early trainer Jodie Lord of Gunning who has three finalists, including Old Bailey and My Boy Rylan who will have the local support.
Raced by the Gordon Blur syndicate, the former Victorian chaser was purchased by his seven owners for $8,000 as a performed dog and now gives them their first feature race opportunity.
The group of friends who met up at the Gordon hotel, which is now their weekly watering hole, decided to buy a dog, for couple though it is not there first.
The owners are, Kate Croker (Car repair business), Glenn Swift (Tiler), John Payne (retired), Scott Gann (owns Carpet Court store), Russel Primer (Primer Towing), Chris Gray and Michael Gray.
For John Payne and Glenn Swift, they are hoping third time luck after having bad luck with their first two dogs, losing the first to injury and then a twisted bowel ended their second greyhound.
John and Glenn are hoping that the cup will be there’s after tomorrow.
Travelling finalist, Knight Sprite raced by Gayle Masterson from the Hunter Valley has already won two features this year and responded to early pressure to win last week’s heat.
Gayle stayed overnight in Goulburn last week and will again make the four hour trip early to give the dog every hope to rest and be fresh for his appointment tomorrow.
One of the major players also is Clock’s Ticking, who is trained by Jason Magri who has won a Goulburn Cup in recent years.
The supporting feature race is the Palmerbet Fireball Final, which will see track specialist, Spider’s Brother, which ran favourite for Neil Staines at Yass. He has now won five of six at the track and this should be a real speed race as the race name suggests.
Workers Club Goulburn Cup – Race 7
- Tullabung Rock; Surprise second in heat behind Takedown. Chased hard last week but this is top class now and despite the box looks to be hard pressed.
- My Boy Rylan; Former Victorian who was no match for El Magnifico in heat. City winner in two States but will need some fortune for local owners to cause an upset at this level.
- Clock’s Ticking; Group 1 finalist in town last month. Ran a slick 25.74 here two weeks back then gallant second in fastest heat. Has box speed, touch of class and major threat.
- Knight Sprite; Multiple Group winner. Won Gosford Cup and Richmond Derby this year. Led all the way, under pressure early in heat win. Will only improve with the run on track and box not really a concern.
- Let It Develop; Reigning Cup Champ having won last year’s race from this box in track record time. Has since won Canberra Cup and Dapto Megastar and led all the way in fastest heat. Ideal draw in centre and can create history wining this. The one to stop.
- El Magnifico; Powerful dog who got a few early breaks in devastating nine lengths heat win from this draw. Has a strong record and in good hands. Luck needed again but will be the late closer.
- Old Bailey; Been racing well and again performed when took off out wide after moderate start when runner-up to Knight Sprite in heat. Will have to work hard in this and this is ultimate test to date.
- Takedown; Maybe the forgotten runner. Broke line quickly in all the way heat win. Can run time but normally slow early. Box looks ideal and will stay out of trouble. Don’t overlook.
- Pittsy Lomar; Even run when third in heat to Takedown from the rails. Had been racing well in Victoria in easier class. Will need some favours if starts.
- Sweetwater Boy; Kennel have won this race twice in recent years. Held ground when third in fastest heat. Place hope with right draw but will be a miracle to gain a start.
