Karen Maree Davis, 30, of Leppington pleaded guilty to attempting to bring a thing into a detention centre, possessing a prohibited drug, and possessing a prescribed restricted substance when she appeared in Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday.
Police said that on May 15 at 2.10pm, Davis was visiting an inmate at the Goulburn jail when correctional officers saw him place something between his buttocks. He was stopped by officers and a small pink balloon was seen to fall on the floor. Davis was detained.
At 2.40pm, police attended and searched her in a nearby room. They found three small balloons in her bra. A search of her car revealed three plastic bags containing a crystal substance. They arrested Davis and took her to Goulburn Police Station.
At the station, police checked the items, which included: buprenorphine (2.01g), heroin (0.58g), tobacco (18g), and methylamphetamine (1.92g).
In court, Davis’ solicitor said his client suffered from drug and alcohol use issues.
“She is no longer in a relationship with the man. She is trying to get her life back on track,” the solicitor said.
Magistrate Carolyn Huntsman said Davis needed to stay off drugs.
“You had no record until this drug habit. I hope you stay away from drugs,” Ms Huntsman said.
She gave Davis an eight-month suspended jail sentence and also placed her on two eight-month good behaviour bonds.
Another woman was given community service for bringing tobacco and drugs into the Goulburn jail.
Jasmine Shakra, 22, of Heckenberg, pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited drug and attempting to bring a thing into a detention centre.
Police said that on November 12 this year, Shakra visited an inmate at the Goulburn jail. Correctional officers searched her car and found broken water-type balloons. Asked if she had anything to declare, Shakra said “no.”
Police attended and searched Shakra in a nearby room. They removed small six balloons from her right bra cup and five balloons from her left bra cup. Shakra said: “It is only tobacco.”
She was arrested and taken to Goulburn Police Station, where the balloons were opened and the contents found to be 23.93g of tobacco and 1.91g of a substance police alleged to be methamphetamine (speed).
Magistrate Carolyn Huntsman said bringing contraband into jail created problems. “It is a serious matter. It causes violence in jail. Tobacco is a currency in there,” she said.
She ordered Shakra do 100 hours of community service and placed her on a 12-month bond.
