The second loco of a freight train derailed at about 8.30am as it was preparing for a trip, an Australian Rail Track Corporation spokesman confirmed.
The mishap saw Blackshaw Road closed until 10.30am when wagons were cleared. Goulburn Mulwaree Council erected barriers across the road.
The derailment occurred as the train was shunting.
“The wagons were across the main line so another loco came off and we split the wagons to clear the track,” a spokesman said.
“One or two passenger trains had minor delays but we were able to get those through.”
The 07:04 Sydney to Canberra Xplorer service was delayed up to 20 minutes and the 07:32 Sydney to Melbourne XPT service also ran to 20 minutes behind schedule.
The ARTC spokesman could not comment on the cause at this stage. The derailment was reported to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. The ARTC will also investigate.
