THE Southern Tablelands Rail Users Group (STRUG) has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement to build a new fleet of XPT trains, but hopes the workshop to build them can be located in Goulburn.

“While we welcome this announcement as a great thing for rail passengers, it does not say a lot about where the jobs will be located,” STRUG secretary John Proctor said.
“It would make sense if this workshop was based in Goulburn because trains run mostly north to south between Sydney and Melbourne through here,” he said.
“Also, there is still available land here near the railway line, including the old wheat yard near the Saleyards – that could be a good green fields site – or there are the old south yards near the Men’s Shed or something could be built south of the city near Southern Meats.”
“We we are keen for the new fleet to have dual modes of operation – electrical and diesel, and we would also like the incorporation of tilt train technology to speed them up.”
