Starting at the church in Breadalbane, riders faced a steady climb to the turnaround at the rail bridge on top of the Cullerin Range. Again the summer heatwave has been making racing condition tough for riders.
Roberts convincingly won A Grade with Callum Emmerton and Riley Fleming well back for the minor placings. In B Grade, Jacob Emmerton managed to pip Michael Beard in the final sprint with Isaac Hogan third.
Tamika Wallace had a narrow one-second win over Gary Sheehy in C Grade with Mark Stutchbury further back in third place. Mick Hookham had an impressive first-up ride, finishing in fourth place. Ted Goad took out D Grade from Annette Pattison.
Another big thank you to the volunteers: Andy, Andrew, Jess, Fiona, Tony, Mrs Bush and Phil.
Next Wednesday evening, another graded scratch race will be at Breadalbane. Sign-on is at 6pm at the church and racing starts at 6.30pm.
Last week
Local racing on January 11 was the Fred McClelland Constructions Handicap on Middle Arm Road, with temperatures nudging 38C degrees and a blustery south westerly.
Starting at the cemetery, riders faced a steady climb to the turnaround just past Dennys Lane, followed by the run home back to the finish line at the cemetery.
Leading off on limit was Chris Berry, Ted Goad, Bluey Emmerton and Mark Stutchbury. Following one minute 30 seconds later were Wayne Bensley, Phil Hansen, Gary Sheehy and Nadine Moroney.
Block riders at three minutes included Shannon Apps, Josh Daniel, Mick Redman and Jacob Emmerton and, needing to make up four minutes, Andy Cartwright and Callum Emmerton raced off scratch.
Stutchbury and Berry led the limit riders toward the turn, but Bluey Emmerton dropped off quickly, while Goad managed to hang on for the first five kilometres.
Callum Emmerton and Cartwright had made steady progress through the field. Cartwright applied pressure on the approach to the turnaround, opening up a break on the Emmerton brothers and Redman.
With five kilometres to go, Cartwright passed Stutchbury and Berry. It became a procession. First Hansen passed the early leaders and moved into second place. Then the Emmerton brothers, followed by Moroney and Sheehy.
Stutchbury managed to jump on the Emmerton boys’ wheels as they chased, but couldn’t catch Hansen, who finished second.
