The ANU student, who won the two-week Bush Bursary program at the beginning of the year, said she was sad to leave.
“I’ve really enjoyed it and and it’s made me look forward to working at a hospital in the future,” Ms Gajendra said.
The intern spent her placement guided by the medical team, wrote notations for medical charts and learnt how to take blood. She worked with three different consultants at the hospital.
“We hadn’t learnt any of this at university so it was great to experience,” she said. “I understood medications and management a lot more.”
She described the first few days as a bit of a struggle but admitted to enjoying her explorations of the city after work.
“This time has helped me figure out what areas I don’t want to get into, because I’m still trying to figure out my field,” she said. “Goulburn might be regional but the hospital does pretty great with their resources with the support of health staff.”
She will continue her participation with the Rural Medical Society and resume her presidency of the Rural Health Club at ANU.
The Bush Bursary program connects medical students with regional communities across the state. Goulburn Mulwaree Council sponsored her placement.
