Station manager Gail Bowdern invited some friends and former staff and contributors to the station to enjoy some cake to mark the event.
“Eighty-five years is a long time for any business to stay in operation and profitable, but 2GN has always been there for the community,” Mrs Bowdern said.
“I thank those who turned up today. To those who have been for listening all these years: thank you for being part of Goulburn and 2GN.”
2GN began broadcasting on January 25, 1932 as reported in the Goulburn Evening Penny Post.
At the time, it was based in a small shed (which is still there) in River Street; then moved to McKell Place for many years; then to its current location in Lagoon Street.
Among those who turned up on Wednesday were Allan ‘Jockey’ Rudd.
Jockey won a talent quest in Goulburn in 1937 at the age of 12 and, as a result, became a regular singer on Friday night programming at the radio station.
“I had to stand on a box to reach the microphone to sing,” Jockey joked.
Also at the event was breakfast announcer Craig Prichard; and returning journalist Michael Prevedello, who worked at 2GN from 1973 to 1986.
