“Goulburn Day VIEW Club is part of a network of 320 clubs throughout Australia,” said president Margaret Gooch. “Joining our VIEW Club is the perfect opportunity to meet regularly with other like-minded women, establish new friendships and help children in need,” she said.
VIEW stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women. It is one of Australia’s leading women’s volunteer organisations and supports the education of disadvantaged children through The Smith Family.
“Our role in the community is underpinned by our support of The Smith Family, a national children’s charity that helps children in need with their education,” Ms Gooch said.
“Through our work with the charity we are helping make life-changing differences to local children and their families.
“Right now the charity is urgently seeking 6000 new sponsors to sign up to support the education of disadvantaged children through its Learning for Life sponsorship program.”
Ms Gooch said the club hosted monthly meetings for members on the first Thursday at 11.30am at the Goulburn Soldiers Club, as well as social days in and around Goulburn each month.
The club’s members volunteer their time and talents in a number of ways.
Members read with local children to advance their literacy skills; help children with homework after school at Smith Family Learning Clubs; act as mentors for students; donate school stationery packs for use at home and school; and donate funds for new toys and books for children in need at Christmas time.
Their ongoing support of The Smith Family includes social events, such as the Riverboat Postman Cruise on the Hawkesbury River on May 23. Should you like to join the club for this day, please contact Wendy on 0417 172 625 or Margaret on 4822 1859. “We are always looking for women from all backgrounds and ages to join us,” Ms Gooch said.
Ms Gooch was elected as president at the annual general meeting and will lead the club into its 40th year, assisted by treasurer/programs Wendy Strauch, welfare Brenda Writer, publicity Delma Nelson and historian Beryl Bales (Jenni Aubrey is secretary).
The next Goulburn Day VIEW Club meeting will be on Thursday, March 2, and feature the International Women’s Day Luncheon.
RSVP to Margaret, 4822 1859, by February 27.
