The moves come ahead of a proposal to convert the building into a performing arts facility.
Most users were advised before Christmas that it was unlikely they’d continue at the facility beyond March, a report to Tuesday night’s council meeting states.
Business services manager Brendan Hollands said some groups had found alternative premises, including in local clubs. STARTS, Alcoholics Anonymous and Landcare have relocated to Workspace 2580. The Gem Society, housed beneath the McDermott Centre, will relocate to the council’s Bourke Street depot.
“This is an interim solution until the sale of the Bourke Street depot occurs sometime in 2018,” the report states.
The University of the Third Age will continue at the McDermott Centre until April 7. Then the group will also temporarily relocate to the Bourke Street depot as well. Alternative accommodation will then be found.
“The council will continue to work with other infrequent users who are looking for alternative venues for their activities,” the report states.
“The section of the building of the building at 56 Clinton Street that is proposed to be used for the council’s Home and Community Care programs could also be made available to some of these groups from July onward.”
The council receives $5000 in rent annually from groups renting the McDermott Centre and is expecting a drop in income.
