Col Glacken's thanks
It was a big night at Marulan Public on February 7 as the school welcomed new families into the community at a 'Meet the Teacher' barbecue. The school leaders officially opened the Col Glacken Friendship Garden with its buddy bench donated by the P&C. Col was the school's general assistant for many years. Even though he has officially retired, he still gives many hours a week tending the school gardens and chickens, sprucing up outdoor furniture, manning the barbecue and volunteering at Breakfast Club. As school vice captain Madi McPherson said: "At our school, everyone has a place, and this is yours."

Australia Day awards
For those who were unable to make Marulan's Australia Day celebrations, we were so proud that Ben Baker is Australia Day Youth of the Year for 2017. Ben completed high school in 2016 topping his class in engineering. He is a member of the Tallong Fire Brigade and Highlands Vintage Machinery Club, and regularly volunteers to help out the Marulan Historical Society, CWA or Lions. Ben is a well deserved recipient of this award.
Citizen of the Year Ellie Eggerking is another popular community member, heavily involved in the Marulan Volunteers who keep our streets looking pristine. She goes above and beyond to help community groups, especially the Marulan Kite Festival, for which she is already preparing in 2017. She is certainly a great asset for our community.
You could not go past Tallong Apple Day as Event of the Year. This festival, running for 11 years, welcomes bout 4000 visitors each year. All money raised goes towards preserving Tallong’s natural heritage, promoting community engagement, and towards local schools.
And Tommy Hailston was a popular choice for Senior Citizen of the Year. Although he may be classed as 'senior', he certainly doesn’t fit this description as, no matter what the job is, Tommy will be there helping out! He also drives unlicensed seniors to doctors' appointments and into town to get supplies. We all need a friend like Tommy Hailston.
Big Read Bus
Next visit to Marulan is Thursday, March 20 at the Public School from 9.30am to 10am; and the Brewer Centre from 10am to 11am.

A reminder these are held at Tony Onions Park/Marulan Memorial Hall on the second Sunday of each month. For information, please call Bernadette on 0430 301 841. These markets are proving to be popular with stall holders and buyers alike.
