There was, of course, the tragedy at Gunning, where three local residents lost their lives.
We also had three ladies who were struck by lightning in Corbett Gardens. At the time of writing, I have just been informed that one of them has passed away.
Police were on the scene of the lightning strike within minutes, and assisted with CPR.
She would have died at the scene if it wasn’t for their actions. At least she had a chance to fight on, but the result has been tragic.
A number of other matters have kept police busy over last few days.
Sadly, there were two fatalities on our roads. A young bloke, who appeared to be travelling way too fast, slammed into a truck on the Hume Highway near Mittagong and died at the scene. Another man was airlifted to hospital.
There was also an elderly man in Goulburn who lost his life on our roads.
In another incident, a police officer was punched. This is part of our work. If we see a fight happening, we’ll do something about it.
Unfortunately, the offender picked the wrong bloke, who was a very highly trained weapons specialist.
Finally, there were two property crimes committed in the Moss Vale area.
Firstly, a man was caught stealing copper and causing damage to State Rail infrastructure. He was arrested due to some great work by our police officers.
Secondly, there was a case of malicious damage to heavy machinery at a worksite.
There have been some social media comments suggesting otherwise, but Moss Vale is perfectly safe and these are isolated instances. Crime is in fact at an historic low.
Lastly, I want to impress upon the community how good our police have been in the face of really tragic incidents. It’s all in a week’s work for the men and women who represent us so well.
