“Council objects outright to the proposal,” Goulburn Mulwaree growth, strategy and planning director Louise Wakefield said during a recent council meeting.
“There is insufficient information to support it entirely. We’re keeping a neutral view before the assessment is finalised.”
Councillor Leah Ferrara and Denzil Sturgiss both sought clarification on the future of the project. There was no further discussion between councillors on this agenda.
This comes after the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council opposed the project earlier this month due to visual and noise concerns.
Residents Against Jupiter Wind Farm member Dr Michael Crawford said there was a history of the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council having “much more involvement”.
“At a state and federal level, MP Pru Goward and Member for Hume Angus Taylor are both highly engaged and both very supportive of the local community,” Dr Crawford said.
“For the Goulburn Mulwaree Council it’s been a bit of a case where they have been distant. They’ve got to be more proactive. Residents of the Goulburn Mulwaree region are concerned about the impacts of this project.”
Acknowledging that the decision is up to the state government, Dr Crawford said council’s views “count more” than the individual person.
“The Goulburn Mulwaree council has a strong basis for pursuing opposition,” Dr Crawford said, referencing future projects which may conflict with the Jupiter Wind Farm’s zoning.
A report of the Jupiter Wind Farm Project, produced by Ms Wakefield and included in the February 21 Business Paper, stated:
“A review of the proposal documentation indicates potential impacts relating to Goulburn Mulwaree Council and its community.”
Impacts include proposed transport routes via the Hume Highway, Hume Street, Clinton Street, Sloane Street and the Goulburn-Braidwood Road.
“While Council generally supports renewable energy initiatives, it is recommended that a submission be made to Department of Planning & Environment outlining council’s concerns,” the report concluded.
A submission is currently being prepared by the Goulburn Mulwaree Council.
