EARLIER: A woman is dead and two children are among a number of people seriously injured in a horrific crash that has closed the Hume Motorway to south-bound traffic near Wilton, south of Sydney.
Emergency services were called to the motorway about 7.50am on Tuesday after two cars were involved in a head-on crash in the motorway's south-bound lanes, about one kilometre south of the Picton Road turn-off.
One of the vehicles rolled onto its roof, and motorists said smoke was coming from the wreckage.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said a woman in one of the vehicles died at the scene.
Emergency service workers are trying to free a second woman who is trapped in the other vehicle. She is believed to be critically injured.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics also treated two children involved in the crash.
Those passengers were trapped in a vehicle for a short time, and were being taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said.
Two rescue helicopters have landed on the motorway, and all south-bound lanes have been closed at Picton Road.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the crash were not yet known. Police from the Crash Investigation Unit are on their way to the scene.
The Transport Management Centre warned south-bound motorists to expect significant delays as emergency services attended the crash scene.
The motorway is expected to remain closed to south-bound traffic for some time.
