A man has been disqualified from driving for 40 years and jailed for 4.5 years following his conviction for a series of police pursuits in southern NSW.
Jeremy O’Hare, 38, of Grong Grong, appeared in Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday charged with several police pursuits
One of these started on the Crookwell Road about 10.30am on March 21, when O’Hare was driving a Ford Festiva towards Goulburn. He failed to stop when directed by police.
Police followed him in to Goulburn as as far as Lagoon Street, where they abandoned the pursuit.
They subsequently found him at a rest area at Carrick on the Hume Highway, arrested him and took him to Goulburn Police Station
They charged him with three outstanding warrants, Skye’s Law – police pursuit, driving an unregistered and unlicensed vehicle and numerous traffic offences alleged to have occurred in March at Narrandera, Wagga and Cowra.
In Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday, O’Hare appeared in the dock. After entering guilty pleas, he was convicted by Magistrate Geraldine Beattie, who said it was very dangerous driving.
O’Hare interjected, saying: “It was the one long pursuit that started in Wagga.”
Ms Beattie told him to be quiet and continued.
“Yes it was one continuous piece of stupidity,” Ms Beattie replied.
“From Crookwell you drove at high speeds into Goulburn. You drove past a hospital and a school and went through a red light.
“You have put the lives of others at risk with this driving over a number of days and you have a history of similar behaviour. You are lucky that no one died as a result of your driving.”
She sentenced him to a total of 4.5 years in prison, with a non-parole period of three years and disqualified him from driving for 40 years.
