REGIONAL 51ST
Chinese news agency Xinhua reports Australia has the fastest mobile broadband speeds in the Asia-Pacific region, but drops to 51st for land-based broadband speeds. In the Xinhua report, Gunning local Dr Michael de Percy of Canberra University says: “...(in) cases like the town of Gunning in NSW, where people have to drive to the top of the nearest hill to check their email, it makes life in the regions very difficult in terms of running businesses or staying in touch with friends and family elsewhere.”
BUSINESS BREAKFAST
Dr de Percy’s comments were effectively endorsed by those at the well attended business breakfast on Tuesday, organised by Gunning District Association (GDA) with the council’s assistance. Internet and mobile phone problems were identified as some of the critical business drawbacks.
There was an inspiring presentation by Ian McGinn (Southern Region Business Enterprise Network) whose business advisers all have run successful businesses for at least 10 years.
Brenda Proudman, Economic Development Officer with the council, spoke about how she and its taskforce can assist district businesses. President of GDA, Peta Luck, who hosted the morning, is a member of this taskforce.
BATTLE LINES
District residents meet this Thursday, St Matthews Hall in Dalton at 6.30pm, regarding AGL re-igniting its proposed Dalton gas-fired power station.
FAME!
Gunning featured on the international stage recently. Resident Dianna Nixon (Wild Voices Music Theatre) and Ad Hoc Baroque staged ‘Bach in the Subways’ last Sunday at Gunning railway station. The event celebrated Bach’s birthday with worldwide performances. Gunning staged the only performance in Australia. The afternoon Melbourne/Sydney train tarried briefly at the station so passengers could enjoy the performance, one praising it with a resounding “Wunderbar!”
