This meeting is a huge one with a double feature. The Rocky Hill Royale for production sedans has attracted 23 nominations with drivers from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and possibly South Australia all keen to take home some of the $5000 prize money.
Among the visiting teams looking for the Rocky Hill Royale prize money will be Johnny Ralph in the AMH Holden. He has not had much luck, so far, on the Goulburn track this season and will be keen to show the hereditary driving skill he possesses as a third-generation sedan racing driver. Like the McAlisters of Goulburn, speedway racing is in his blood and no doubt his dad will be in the pits and his grandfather on the hill.
Local drivers including the NSW Champion are also keen to make it one, two and three on the podium in the 30 lap feature race.
The other feature event is the Michelle Ward Memorial Race: $5000 first prize for Late Models, 50-lap final.
There are about 20 nominations in this class so far with drivers coming from interstate to have a crack at the big prize money. The program is also scheduled to be supported by the Formula 500s and Mod Lites.
Gates open at 4pm with racing from 6pm.
This should be a huge night of racing with the majority of cars and drivers coming from out of town to challenge the locals and those with local connections. The Nicastri family, who were among the founding members of Goulburn Speedway and for many years ran Frank’s Auto Spares and towing service in Goulburn, will be back to catch up with friends and support Ben and possibly Ross in the Late Models.
The canteen will be operating as usual, if you get hungry or thirsty.
Dirt track racing in Australia really had its beginnings in Goulburn with the first grand prix at the Goulburn Showground.
This Saturday is a good opportunity for locals to experience the thrills of the modern day sport without leaving our city.
In two weeks’ time, on April 8, Goulburn is scheduled to host two NSW Titles and an ACT Title as well as hold its demolition derby This meeting will start early with gates opening at 2pm and racing at 4pm. So mark it in your calendars as it could be the last Goulburn meeting till spring.
