With eight days to go, Williams is hoping for plenty of sunshine as the young chestnut filly doesn’t like wet tracks.
“I rode her myself in a training jump out on the Goulburn track and she just sank,” Williams said. “In the Pharlap Stakes at Rosehill on March 11, she finished a good fourth over 1500 metres, but found the going hard in the wet conditions.
“The gait of the horse makes a difference. Horses like Winx seem to just glide across the surface. Others like Pumpkin Pie tend to dig in. You can see the difference in their running style.”
Williams says Pumpkin Pie “is a lovely horse to work with, a pleasure to train and to watch. She has a lovely personality and responds well to training. It wouldn’t surprise me, come spring, for her to be heading to Melbourne for the spring carnival as a four-year-old.”
Pumpkin Pie will have a Tuesday workout to finish preparations. If she wins in Sydney, TAB will share $5000 between the Goulburn SES and RFS as winners of the 2017 TAB Country and Provincial Editors’ Challenge.
