The Goulburn Lantern Club raising funds for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) supporting families in the Goulburn area hosted a 40th anniversary lunch on Friday, April 7 for members and guests at Cascades Restaurant Centretown Lagoon Motel.
President Rona Hope welcomed members and guests and had great pleasure in welcoming: Chris Rehn, RIDBC chief executive; Megan Thomas, Lantern Club executive; and Jan Bell, Southern Highlands.
It was with pleasure that Mr Rehn presented service stars to several members including: 40-year service stars to Betty Rose, inaugural member and life member, and Melva Durrant, life member; 10-year service stars to Evie Boswell and Betty Thorburn; and five-year service stars to Joyce Heffernan and June Matthews. Megan Thomas presented membership badges to Anne Hockey, Heather Armstrong and Judy Jackson.
Mr Rehn said it was a pleasure to be in Goulburn to celebrate 40 years of Goulburn Lantern Club. He praised the work of the Club.
In 1977 Professor Graham Clark worked on the bionic ear for the hearing impaired which progressed to work on the cochlear implant.
The first child fitted with a cochlear implant in the world was in 1997.
A female student supported by RIDBC – vision impaired and hearing disability – fitted with a cochlea implant for hearing graduated with 96.8 per cent in Year 12 and is now studying arts-law at Macquarie University.
RIDBC can be accessed from many sites across Sydney and Australia. A relatively new one has been opened in Deakin ACT.
A delightful arrangement of cupcakes was made and decorated by Rona for the anniversary cake. Mr Rehn blew out the candles.
Lee Oxley won the door prize and Betty Thorburn and Shirley Stevenson won the raffles.
