Tree rot was thought to have claimed the species, taken from the original Lone Pine at Gallipoli and planted in 1965 “in memory of departed fallen comrades.”

Lodge chairman Russell Sheely said the loss was devastating, not only for the Club but residents who had grown fond of the tree, which attracted an abundance of bird life.

“We think water got down into the trunk, causing the rot and for the limb to split,” he said.

President Jean Lloyd said the tree used to be much bigger, before pruning.

Mr Sheely told The Post an arborist would have to assess the remains but he wasn’t holding out much hope. If the tree is removed, Legacy will investigate whether a seedling can be used to propagate another in the grounds.
