Legacy is uniquely Australian, set up by Stanley Savige in 1925 at the suggestion of General Sir John Jellibrand, on his return from WWI, to help returned soldiers and their families. There are 49 clubs in Australia and one in London, operated by some 5900 Legatees.
Legacy supports widows, young families and defence force families, to bring friendship and advocacy, social contact and to ensure they are aware of the services available. Whole families can suffer from the effects of PTSD. Goulburn runs many social events, teas and lunches.
Legacy Lodge in Goulburn has 20 units available. All are self-care, and are kept in good order by the Legacy Lodge Committee members.
Jean became a Legatee as her father was killed in New Guinea before her birth. She enjoyed social functions and learnt physical culture and verse speaking, which was useful in her teaching career.
Legacy receives no help from the government and money is raised in Appeals Week, when badges, pens, key rings and bears are sold. Some new merchandise will be available this year.
Jean has found the job as president rewarding, the downside being the loss widows, now in their 80s and 90s. Wars are a fact of life, and we must never forget the service these men and women gave, and try to alleviate the pain and loneliness of those left behind.
The next meeting in May is themed Mother's Day, and members are asked to share memories of their mother. Goulburn Evening VIEW Club meets for dinner on the second Tuesday evening monthly. VIEW assists the Smith Family in helping Learning for Life students receive a better education. Any woman interested in joining may phone President Lorraine on 4821 8046.
