Ss Peter and Paul’s Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School, Tablelands Rural Education Community (TREC), which includes five schools in the district, St Mary’s Primary School from Crookwell and Mt Carmell from Yass participated in the all day event.
About 100 students participated in a round robin knock out for the title. The four fields were divided into tackle and touch rugby.
Organised by the Brumbies, South Coast Monaro rugby development officer Lachlan Creighton says continued support should be given to junior rugby players across the district.
“It comes from grassroots rugby if we don’t have juniors and the foundation we’ll struggle in the future,” Creighton said.
Namesake and rugby legend Peter Lucas also attended the event, speaking to groups of children before and after games.
“I wasn’t always the best player, but I worked hard,” he said to eager rugby players.
He spoke of representing Australia and traveling to Hong Kong. He advised players against arguing with a referees decision and to learn from different positions on the field.
Conceived by rugby players, the cup was an opportunity for their children and fellow junior rugby players to access pathways for their sporting future.
“It’s great to see the schools put time in it and let the kids come out and play. The avenue for rugby is fantastic,” the former Goulburn High School sports teacher and Dirty Reds player said.
“I’m a person who believes in all sports, but it’s particularly special because it’s a part of my past.”
He said the diversity in sport, in particular, the growth of the women’s league is a great change to see.
The cup final was between Ss Peter and Paul’s Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School. Ss Peter and Paul’s Primary School year five and six team took the cup title with four tries to one. The team will head to Canberra in early June and compete at the GIO Stadium.
