The room was silent as the Big Fat Smile chair read out The Cow Tripped over the Moon with the rest of the country at 11am.
Director of the Reynold’s Street Community Preschool Jo Mavrigiannakis said the 30 students were well versed in the book, hence the anticipation and moon masks donned.
“We want to reinforce to children the enjoyment they will receive when reading books. They may not be at the level to read the books but we point to the words as we read and they know these words have meaning,” she said.
The book, written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood, is a spin off to the famous riddle and carries themes of perseverance and friendship.
“Ongoing learning is what we are on about. It shows children the skill of picking up a book to obtain information.”
Mr Campbell, who led an animated discussion with the children after the reading, said the day was an opportunity to focus on literacy and reinforce the quality rating as a business.
All parents were invited to attend the preschool.
All of the 26 Big Fat Smile centres across NSW participated in the NSS.
The Goulburn Mulwaree Library with the support of Trinity Catholic College year 10 drama students also participated in the NSS. Over 60 parents and children were in attendance at the library.
Windellama Public School was also visited by the Big Read Bus.
The National Simultaneous Storytime is a national campaign to encourage children to read more books.
