Named as the ‘One To Watch’ by Time Out Magazine in 2015 she took her debut one hour show Elephant to the Edinburgh Fringe festival and received great reviews.
This is the second time she has traveled to Australia and describes herself as producing “real honest comedy with relatable and observational stuff”.
As a child she admitted to being quiet but soon changed when she entered high school and grew into a confident teenager.
“I used to do improvisation as a kid, but then didn’t do anything creative for a long time,” she said.
“Getting into work, I didn’t want to do a 9-5, so I tried stand-up just to give it a go.”
Starting at 18, Callaghan didn’t know much about the comedy industry or key contacts to help her fight through the competitive ranks.
But this didn’t stop her career. Over the past 27 days she has performed in 40 gigs across the country.
“It has been so good and so fun. The first time I was in Australia was last year, now I know what to expect,” she said in the lead-up to this weekend.
“There’s a warm welcome and I’ve had return customers from last year. Locals from here following my progress live in England is a massive compliment. If they can relate and I can make them laugh, that’s most important.”
As a young female comedian she has admitted to never experiencing sexism and strongly believes her young age is an advantage.
“It doesn’t matter your gender, colour or age. If you’re funny, you’re funny,” she said.
She advises young people who are interested in comedy to have a go. “It’s harder than it looks, but it’s a great confidence-builder and you have the opportunity to travel the world.”
She has never performed in a regional location and looks forward to visiting Goulburn.
She will join:
Becky Lucas
Regular Triple J guest and writer Becky Lucas has been described as a commanding and exciting new Australian comedian.
Opening for Beth Stelling and Little Esther in the US, and featured in the New Zealand International Comedy Festival as part pf the Breakout show for rising overseas stars.
Her comedy is honest, the experiences retold are uncomfortably realistic and cleverly put together.
Rhys Nicholson
Sharply dressed, Newcastle-born Rhys Nicholson won the best newcomer at the Sydney Comedy festival in 2012.
Sharing his experiences with and of the LGBT community in Australia, his wit is enjoyably strategic and fast-paced. He has supported Louis CK, Amy Schumer and Wil Anderson radiating a strong presence on the stage.
He will continue his tour in Mittagong.
Luke Heggie
Representing a more traditional sense of Australian comedy, Luke Heggie is comically harsh and comments on the characteristics of Australian culture.
He won the Melbourne International Comedy Festivals 2010 Raw Comedy and received the Sydney Comedy Festival’s Director’s Choice Award for his sold-out 2015 show You’re Not Special.
He has also worked for ABC2.
- The show will run from 7.30-9.30pm at the Goulburn Workers Club. Tickets cost $35.
